Why silk notgeld?


In mid-July 1921 the city of Bielefeld celebrated its 700th birthday. Although it was already known at the time that the city of Bielefeld was founded in 1214, but wanted to give the people of Bielefeld a reason to celebrate after the world war, revolution and difficult years. In this context, Paul Hanke, the director of the Stadtsparkasse Bielefeld, had produced banknotes on fabric, initially on silk, later also on velvet, jute or linen. With this idea he wanted to link himself to the ancient textile traditions of the city. His idea was a great success, and attracted collectors from all over the world. Indeed, after the first fabric banknotes for 25 marks appeared on July 25, the Stadtsparkasse had strong demand with requests also coming from abroad. The Stadtsparkasse decided to continue their issue with always new nominal values ​​and illustrations. Were created different variant for collector that included embroidery, borders and lace in different colors.
